7/5/2023 Would You Do What They Did? - Great Christian Leaders from Ou... by William Dean HamiltonRead Now![]() In the eyes of these believers, that covenant is threatened by cultural changes like taking prayer out of public schools and legalizing abortion and gay marriage, Neumann says. Christians who subscribe to those teachings believe the United States has a covenant with God, and that if it is broken, the nation risks literal destruction - analogous to the siege of Jerusalem in the Hebrew Bible. For this type of believer, love of God and love of country are sometimes seen as one and the same.Ĭhristian nationalism is “a huge theme throughout evangelical Christendom,” Neumann says, referring to teachings that posit America as God’s chosen nation. In this tradition, one’s belief is based less on scripture than on conservative culture, some political disagreements are seen as having nigh-apocalyptic stakes and “a strong authoritarian streak” runs through the faith. She sees QAnon’s popularity among certain segments of Christendom not as an aberration, but as the troubling-but-natural outgrowth of a strain of American Christianity. Her knowledge of that world, and her expertise on issues of violent extremism, gives her a unique insight into the ways QAnon is driving some Christians to extremism and violence. ![]() ![]() ![]() Neumann, who was raised in the evangelical tradition, is a devout Christian. ![]()

![]() Naturally, Burgess spends considerable time on Shakespeare’s relationships with the Dark Lady and Fair Youth of Shakespeare’s sonnets, rendered here as Fatimah, a woman of color from the East Indies, and Henry Wriothesley, third Earl of Southampton. Nothing Like the Sun’s subtitle is A story of Shakespeare’s Love-life, and so it is–it follows Shakespeare, rendered here as WS, from a young man struck by the image of a dark goddess to an man wasting away from syphilis. When I came back from fall break and realized I hadn’t even started it yet (it was either that or my economics textbook, people!), I picked it up without much ceremony or knowing much about it–I knew Burgess wrote A Clockwork Orange, which I’ll probably never read, and that it, in some fashion, dealt with race and Shakespeare. ![]() ![]() ![]() Naturally, in my Race in Shakespeare class, we read a lot of plays, but there is one novel on the syllabus–Anthony Burgess’ Nothing Like the Sun. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() It also has a character list by chapter and the Penguin edition has maps and some lovely illustrations. The Tyler translation has a concise summary of what happens by Chapter, and the relative age of both Genji and Kaoru (his rumored son) by Chapter. I read bits and pieces of each, and I must say that I preferred the Seindensticker one. The only other version that I have heard of is the one by Royall Tyler, and there were a few in our book club that read his 2001 version. I read the first complete English translation by Edward Seidensticker (Arthur Waley’s translation in 1960 was one chapter short of completion), completed in 1976. I read 150 pages per week for 8 weeks, and that’s a pretty good clip for me these days for a work that is not a particularly easy read. It’s difficult to imagine what my life will now be like without spending every spare moment reading 'The Tale of Genji' to make my deadline for the book club (January 25 th). ![]() As with most epics, I had to change my daily life schedule to complete it. It takes courage to dive into an 11th century Japanese text, especially one that is 1184 pages and often referred to as the world’s first novel (though many consider “ Ochikubo Monogatari” as the first ever).
